The game got off a to a poor start for United’s second team, going down 1-0 in the 17th minute to a free-kick from Chelsea’s Kasey Palmer. After drawing level early in the second half, United looked like the only side gunning for a victory.

The U21 clash was an opportunity for some players to prove their fitness: “England internationals Phil Jones and Ashley Young started the game returning following their respective injuries as well as Cameron Borthwick-Jackson who appeared at left-back”, according to the site.

United had clear chances to take the full three points, with Ashley Young in particular failing to convert on several occasions in the second half. U21 side action continues next Monday when the Reds play home to Middlesbrough.
