After a small war between FC Barcelona and Real Madrid emerged concerning the Copa del Rey final, the Santiago Bernabéu is officially unable to host the event. Bruce Springsteen just announced a concert to be held at the stadium on the same day of the final.
The Boss has just saved Real president Florentino Pérez the trouble of holding a press conference to reject the event. Joan Gaspart, former Barça president, already made a statement last week daring Pérez to come out and admit they didn’t want to host.
Unfortunately, this problem will probably happen again if Barcelona keep qualifying for the final. Just last year we saw the same kind of behavior by the Catalan club. Los Blancos were able to avoid holding the event after claiming construction would interfere.
Barcelona has also forbidden Real of playing in the Camp Nou before. In 2004, the final was set to be played there, yet at the last minute it changed. The cup was finally played in RCD Espanyol’s Montjuic, with Madrid losing 3-2 versus Real Zaragoza.
Madridistas don’t forgive or forget the events of the 1997 final at the Bernabéu between Barcelona and Real Betis. Fans of each team destroyed the restroom facilities, messed with seats and started bonfires inside the stadium. Because of this, the fierce rivals will probably won’t be able to play in the Spanish capital again.
