Speaking ahead of the crunch game with Wolfsburg at Old Trafford, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Louis Van Gaal believe Manchester United can go onto lift the Champions League this season.
After defeat in the opening game against PSV, United will be hoping for a better outcome this time around. Old Trafford on a Champions League night is certainly a sight to behold, and the fans will be excited to see the return of top flight European football at the theatre of dreams. They have been entertained by magical nights over the years, and they will want to see the team kick start this campaign after the stuttering start.
United climbed to the top of the Premier League with victory against Sunderland at the weekend and the team looks to have much better balance with Martial leading the line and Rooney dropping into the number 10 role. The return of De Gea to the starting line up must also feel like a new signing and with Schweinsteiger looking stronger and fitter the more games he plays, confidence is certainly soaring.
Van Gaal is quoted as saying “It is realistic to expect us to win the Premier League and the Champions League [before my contract expires]…..Because I did it everywhere” and Schweinsteiger added “I think this team is good enough to win it……But, of course, first of all we have to do our work”.
The optimism of the manager and his star German midfielder will add to the confidence in the dressing room and also on the terraces. Schweinsteiger has quickly shown his impact both on and off the pitch, he is a commanding figure and United will want that optimism and character to feed through the entire team.
