The international pre-World Cup friendly, Mexico vs Portugal, will take place this Friday, June 6, 2014 (5:30 PM Pacific) at the Gillette Stadium. Mexico and Portugal will face-off in what is expected to be an entertaining and good match only six days before the start of the FIFA Brazil 2014 World Cup on June 12.
The Mexican national team is coming off their loss in the Miguel Herrera era when they lost 0-1 against Bosnia-Herzegovina last Tuesday in Chicago. In that game, ‘El Tri’ used an alternate rotation which played poorly on offense. Against Portugal, Mexico is expected to use the same lineup which they will play with on June 13 in their first World Cup game against Cameroon.
Piojo Herrera and his players have had a strenuous World Cup camp, which has seen them played well against Israel and Ecuador, poorly against Bosnia, and as well marred by the costly injuries of Juan Carlos Medina and Luis Montes. The game against Portugal will seal that 3 week long camp, and most importantly, it will give a good image of what is the true form the team is currently in.
On the other side of the field will be Portugal, who unfortunately have to play without their star and currently the world’s best footballer, Cristiano Ronaldo. The Real Madrid star forward has been suffering from tendonitis to his left leg, and his full form at the start of the World Cup is still unpredictable. Apart from Ronaldo, the team will also be without defender Pepe, and midfielder, Raul Meireles.
Mexico vs Portugal Prediction
This game between Mexico and Portugal will be a high caliber face-off between two teams who will show the fans in what form they currently stand in. Although neither side may show their best face as it is still a friendly and there are several injuries, this game will be played with an official-match mentality as we are less than a week away from the start of the World Cup.
Portugal is the favorite to win this game even without stars like Cristiano Ronaldo, Pepe, and Raul Meireles, due to their better talent. However, Mexico is a team that tends to elevate their form when they play against high caliber teams, therefore a close match, with not many goals is to be expected. In a good game, the Mexico vs Portugal match will end in a 1-1 draw.
