As the always brilliant and hazardous Eden slotted a calm penalty past Tim Krul, and news arrived that Norwich were earning an important point against Manchester City, it was very clear that Mourinho’s side would be in the driver’s seat once the match was over.
Once again, Mourinho could not hide his delight after overcoming a difficult opponent, and seeing Chelsea on top of the table. But, like last week, the ‘little horse’ Chelsea is now wearing the L-plate. The Portuguese said, “it is time to kill the horses”, and continued, “Manchester City is a Jaguar. You cannot put an ‘L’ plate on a Jaguar.”
Mourinho, who spent close to £50m in the transfer window last month, still believes that his side are only favorite to win the next game, but are not title favorites. The win lifted Chelsea to the top of the league, one point clear of Arsenal, who face another tricky test when they host Manchester United on Wednesday, and two points clear of Manchester City.
Mourinho, though, is less concerned about the title race, and more focused on the Champions League spots, he said, “I want to secure the Champions League spot and the further we are from fifth place, then we can begin to think about other things. For now, my concern is increasing the gap between ourselves and fifth.”
