Match Preview

This is a meeting between two historic Mexico City clubs, but the present matters more than the past. Pumas UNAM start Jornada 12 in 12th place with 13 points, and Atlante are 16th with 11.

Eighth place, the last Liguilla spot, currently sits on 15 points. Pumas UNAM start the night two points below that line and Atlante four below it.

There is no safety net underneath them. The Apertura 2026 has no Play-In round, so only the top eight clubs advance to the Liguilla quarterfinals, and five matches remain after this one.

The fixture itself has been gone for more than a decade. Atlante dropped out of the top flight after the Clausura 2014 season and returned this year after buying the Mazatlan FC franchise. The clubs have not met in Liga MX since Clausura 2014, when Pumas UNAM won 5-0.

Their last meeting in any competition came a few months later, a Copa MX match in August 2014 that Pumas UNAM won 3-2 at Atlante. Atlante’s last league win in this fixture is older still: a 1-0 home victory on September 21, 2013.

Atlante are led by Miguel Herrera, one of the most emblematic players in the club’s history, and they play their home matches this season at Estadio Banorte, the Estadio Azteca. Pumas UNAM, coached by Esteban Solari, make the short trip across the capital to a stadium they know well.

Recent Form

League matches only. Atlante have won once in their last five: they drew 1-1 at Atlas, lost 3-0 at home to Pachuca, drew 1-1 at Puebla, beat Monterrey 4-2 at home and lost 2-0 at Queretaro.

Those are lean returns, but the Monterrey result shows what Atlante can do at home. Their only two wins of the whole tournament are that 4-2 victory and a 3-2 win at Cruz Azul back in Jornada 3.

Pumas UNAM are winless in four. Their last five league matches read: a 3-1 home win over Leon, a 3-0 defeat at Chivas de Guadalajara, a 1-1 draw at Atlas, a 3-2 home loss to Atletico San Luis and a 3-3 home draw with Cruz Azul.

The Cruz Azul draw summed up their season. Pumas UNAM led, lost César Huerta to a red card, went 3-1 up anyway through Robert Morales, and still let the win slip.

Team News

Pumas UNAM are without César “Chino” Huerta. The winger scored against Cruz Azul in Jornada 11, was sent off in the 37th minute for a second yellow card, and is suspended for this match.

Forward José Juan Macías also remains out for Pumas UNAM with a long-term injury, so he plays no part on Friday either.

Atlante’s team news is quieter. Edgar Jiménez was back in the matchday squad for the Jornada 11 trip to Queretaro, where he was named among the substitutes.

Key Storylines

Keylor Navas reaches 50 Liga MX matches for Pumas UNAM. Friday is a milestone night for the Costa Rican goalkeeper. He plays his 50th Liga MX match for the club, across 42 regular season matches and seven more in the Liguilla, a little over a year after arriving from Newell’s Old Boys.

He has made 171 saves and kept 13 clean sheets in that time, and he has played every match of the Apertura 2026 so far.

Juninho has to carry the Pumas UNAM attack. With Huerta suspended, more of the scoring load falls on Juninho, the club’s top scorer with six league goals, a total that ties him for third in the tournament scoring table. At the other end, Atlante goalkeeper Óscar Jiménez ranks third in the Apertura saves table with 42 saves, and he is likely to be busy again.

Atlante have lost only once at home. Their one home defeat all tournament was the 3-0 loss to Pachuca, and they beat Monterrey 4-2 in their most recent home match. Pumas UNAM, for their part, have won twice on the road this season.

Provisional places are on the line. A win takes Pumas UNAM to 16 points and into the fight for eighth place, subject to the rest of the Jornada 12 results. A win takes Atlante to 14 and keeps them in touch. A draw does little for either club.

What comes next for Atlante and Pumas UNAM?

Atlante travel to FC Juarez on Tuesday, October 20, and Pumas UNAM visit Santos Laguna on Wednesday, October 21, in Jornada 13. Both are on the road next, which makes Friday’s points even more valuable for two clubs chasing the same cut line.
