Queretaro goes into this weekend third in the Liga MX table on 20 points, and on Saturday, October 17, it visits Santos Laguna at Estadio TSM Corona in Jornada 12.
In the middle of that week, the darkest night in Mexican soccer is back in front of the whole country. Tragedia en el Estadio Corregidora, HBO’s new documentary series, premiered today, Thursday, October 15, 2026, on HBO Max.
The series returns to March 5, 2022, when a Liga MX match between Queretaro and Atlas at Estadio Corregidora turned into a riot and a violent brawl between rival fans. All three episodes are available to stream now.
Four years on, HBO has built the series around the questions that night left unresolved. In the United States catalog, it carries the English title Corregidora: The Darkest Night in Mexican Soccer.
Three Questions the Series Reopens
The first episode, “The Tragedy,” follows the match as it leads to unprecedented fan violence.
The second episode is titled “Were There Any Deaths?” It examines discrepancies over the number of fatalities that lead some to question the government’s official story.
The third episode, “Organized Crime,” looks at theories about how the riot was instigated, and at victims still living with lasting scars.
HBO frames the series around conflicting narratives, not a single agreed version. It raises these questions without pretending to settle them, and that is exactly the point.
It Rebuilds the Night Piece by Piece
HBO takes a journalistic, investigative approach to the story. The series combines archival footage with testimony that has never been published before.
The voices come from every side of the case: victims, witnesses, journalists, authorities and people connected to what happened that night.
HBO does not hand the viewer a single verdict. It lays out the pieces of the investigation and invites the audience to draw its own conclusions.
The series is directed by Alberto Arnaut and written by Mauricio Vélez and Lisa Estella. It is an HBO Original production from Pacha Films.
The People Who Lived It Do the Talking
Queretaro and Atlas supporters who were inside the stadium tell the story in their own words.
So do the journalists who covered it: Óscar Balderas, Marion Reimers and Álvaro Morales all appear in the series.
And so do the men who held power that night. Queretaro governor Mauricio Kuri and former Club Queretaro president Gabriel Solares are among the voices HBO gathered.
That mix is what makes the series hard to shake. The accounts do not always agree, and HBO lets the contradictions sit on screen.
Why It Matters on Saturday
That is why the premiere lands differently this week. The series is not a history lesson dropped into a quiet schedule. It arrives two days before Queretaro plays a league match, with the club third in the table.
Watch it as pre-match reading. All three episodes of Tragedia en el Estadio Corregidora are streaming now on HBO Max.
