Benched After the Complaint: Club America vs Monterrey Referee Gets Only Fourth Official Duty

Soccer fourth official holding a substitution board

Óscar Mejía will not referee a match as the central official in Jornada 12. The man in the middle for Saturday’s 1-1 draw between Club América and Monterrey at Estadio Banorte does not appear among the central referees in the Comisión de Árbitros designations for this weekend, days after Monterrey announced it would file a formal complaint over his performance. RÉCORD reports that Mejía’s only role this round is as fourth official for Cruz Azul vs FC Juárez.

The draw on October 10 left Monterrey furious over two decisions. In the first half, Cristián Borja stepped on Jesús Manuel Corona inside the area and play continued, with no penalty awarded and no VAR review. Later, Brian Rodríguez escaped any sanction after an alleged insult directed at the fourth official. Monterrey let it be known the club would present a formal complaint to the Comisión de Árbitros and ask for Mejía’s performance to be evaluated.

The reporting out of Mexico reads the assignment list as the answer. RÉCORD frames Mejía’s Jornada 12 role as a punishment and reports that Rayados did present their complaint, while David Medrano reported the referee had been sent to the freezer, the “congeladora,” by the commission’s technical area. The commission itself has published no statement calling this a sanction, so the motive remains the interpretation of the reporting. What is official record is the list itself: nine Jornada 12 matches, and Mejía is the central in none of them.

The same designations give Club América their referee for Saturday. Ismael Rosario López will take charge of León vs Club América at Estadio León, while César Ramos, one of the most experienced referees in Mexican soccer, has been handed Monterrey vs Pachuca.

No disciplinary ruling has been announced for anyone involved in Saturday’s match. Brian Rodríguez remains unsanctioned, and the length of Miguel Borja’s suspension for his straight red card still awaits the official FMF report. Saturday’s trip to León is the first of two away matches in five days for Club América, with Atlas to follow on Wednesday, October 21.
