This Saturday, February 26, 2022 Monterrey announced that Javier Aguirre was no longer the manager of the team. The announcement came a few hours after Rayados suffered a devastating 2-0 loss to Atletico San Luis at home in front of the home fans.

Considering San Luis has been one of the worst teams in the Liga MX this season, this was the worst defeat for Monterrey in the current campaign. Under Aguirre, Monterrey had one loss, two draws and two defeats when the decision to terminate his contract became public.

The Monterrey fans had been heavily pressuring “Vasco” Aguirre and the players after a woeful display in the FIFA Club World Cup. Rayados finished fifth in the international tournament and failed to defeat an Al Ahly side without several key players due to them being with the Egypt national team at the time.

Fans became restless after that display asking for Aguirre to leave the club along with members of the front office. Monterrey faithful also pressured players by waiting for them in the team parking lot after practices and shouting at the players that did not want to speak to the fans.

The team from Nuevo Leon is severely underperforming as they have the most expensive roster in the Liga MX and are currently in 16th place. Monterrey has players like Rogelio Funes Mori, Maxi Meza, Rodolfo Pizarro and Hector Moreno, who are all playing below their potential.

Javier Aguirre also had little to no success in other seasons in charge of Monterrey, failing to get past the quarterfinal stage with the team. There are already some rumors as to who can replace Aguirre as Victor Manuel Vucetich has been named as one of the potential candidates.
