The second week of the new season is here, and it will feature a couple of new coaches facing off against each other: Santiago Solari from Club America vs Javier Aguirre from Monterrey.
Solari started off his tenure with a 2-1 at home over perennial minnows Atletico San Luis. Club America was clearly superior and truly didn’t face much of a challenge. Now, Solari will have a tough test in his visit to one of the Liga MX’s toughest sides.
Javier Aguirre also had a comfortable debut with a visit to Guadalajara, where Monterrey swept aside Atlas with a 2-0 victory at the Estadio Jalisco. Aguirre is an extremely talented and experienced coach with the highest salary in the Liga MX.
Monterrey ownership expects nothing less than perfection from Aguirre, and a season with anything less than a Liga MX Final appearance will be considered a complete failure.
Similarly, Solari is expected to bring trophies to Club America, and anything less than absolute success would be deemed a failure.
This will be a close encounter, but I expect that Javier Aguirre’s talent and the home field advantage will be enough for Monterrey to earn a 2-1 home victory.
I believe Aguirre will do well at Monterrey, while I suspect Solari will not finish the year as head coach of Club America. However, this is just the beginning of their journeys, and there is much soccer yet to be played.
