This past Monday, December 17, 2019, Chivas de Guadalajara officially announced the signing of Alexis Pena. The 23-year-old centre-back is coming over from Necaxa, like a few other players that Chivas have signed in this transfer market.

Pena is also from Culiacan, Sinaloa, like Jesus Angulo, who was also acquired from Necaxa recently. The Mexican defender is a youth product of Pachuca’s prestigious youth academy and also made his Liga MX debut with Los Tuzos in 2016.

Pena played with Pachuca from 2016-2018, before being picked up by Necaxa in 2019. The Sinaloa native was a consistent starter for Los Rayos in his first season with the team with 17 starts in the 2019 Clausura.

Pena was not as consistent this season with only four starts, but he still made appearances in the playoffs with Necaxa. The 23-year-old has his work cut out for him with a lot of competition in the centre-back slots.

Chivas has Antonio Briseno, Oswaldo Alanis and Hiram Mier on the current roster and Pena is not guaranteed a starting role. However, the young defender is a solid option, especially with his physicality, standing in at 6-foot-1 and will have a fighting chance to crack Luis Fernando Tena’s starting 11.
