Club America hosted Puebla at the Estadio Azteca for a game in Week 10 of the Liga MX 2019 Clausura this Saturday, March 9, 2019. Both teams were going into this clash with 13 points each and were looking for the three points to stay in the playoff race.

Las Aguilas dominated the first half of the encounter with more possession and more total shots than La Franja. However, Los Camoteros were very ordered in the backline and were closing spaces, which made it difficult for Los Azulcremas to score.

Colombian midfielder Omar Fernandez picked up an injury for Puebla in the 44th minute and had to be taken out of the match as Matias Alustiza replaced him. The first half ended scoreless and the second half began with a similar pace as “El Chelis” was clearly aiming to get a draw at the Estadio Azteca. Miguel Herrera replaced French forward Jeremy Menez with Nicolas Benedetti to start off the half.

Mexican midfielder Alan Acosta received a red card in the 47th minute as Puebla was left with 10 men early on in the second half. “Chelis” had to make some adjustments to his team after the red card as he took out Alejandro Chumacero and brought on Pablo Gonzalez in the 54th minute.

“Piojo” Herrera was really pushing to get the win at the Estadio Azteca and replaced defender Luis Reyes with winger Francisco Cordova in the 64th minute. In the 77TH minute, Jose Luis Sanchez Sola decided to take out Matias Alustiza and bring on Jose Daniel Guerrero to add an extra man in the midfield.

Alustiza had been subbed on at the end of the first half and was clearly not happy with the decision as he argued with his manager. Miguel Herrera then made his final substitution in the 80th minute as fullback Luis Reyes came off for centre-back Bruno Valdez to try and get an edge in the aerial game.

The deadlock between both teams finally broke in the 86th minute as Francisco Cordova found space to release a shot in the penalty area after a shot that smashed the post. The Mexico City team was able to come away with the slim win at the Azteca as Miguel Herrera’s side struggled throughout the match even with the man advantage.

This was Puebla’s first loss under the leadership of “El Chelis” this season while Club America broke a two-game winless streak to improve to 16 points.
