Liga MX 2019 Clausura Recap: Veracruz 2-2 Santos Laguna

Source: Club Santos

Week 10 of the Liga MX 2019 Clausura started off at the Estadio Luis “Pirata” Fuente as Veracruz hosted Santos Laguna. Both teams were going into the match with distinct objectives as Veracruz has nothing left to play for while Santos Laguna is in the mix for a playoff spot.

Los Tiburones Rojos were going into this match with a 19-game winless streak in league play and failed to snap that horrendous run. Los Escualos had a positive start as Bryan Carrasco opened the scoring at the “Pirata” Fuente in just the ninth minute of play.

The Chilean winger scored with a shot inside of the penalty area off a cross by Colombian midfielder Jefferson Murillo. Santos Laguna responded in the 25th minute as Julio Furch scored against his former team with a shot after a deflected shot by Javier Correa. The Argentine striker did not celebrate as Veracruz was the team that brought him to Mexico’s top flight division.

The first half ended with great intensity at the “Pirata” Fuente and the second half stayed the same as both teams kept pressuring one another. The Celestial Warriors gained a lead in the 75th minute as Javier Correa scored off a cross by Colombian winger Deiner Quinones.

The goal came via a counter-attack as Santos’ goalkeeper Jonathan Orozco punted the ball upfield and found Correa. The Argentine striker then passed the ball to Deinner Quinones, who crossed it from the edge of the box back to Correa.

Santos had a slim 2-1 lead that would not last as Diego Chavez tied it up for the home team in the 80th minute. “El Puma” scored a wonder goal as he shot from just outside of the box to beat Jonathan Orozco and tie the game in the port city.

The game finished 2-2, but Veracruz had a golden opportunity to take the three points in the 89th minute. Cristian Menendez almost put the ball in the back of the net, but Jonathan Orozco somehow managed to swat the ball out of danger.

The result was disappointing for both sides as Veracruz could have easily won the game and Los Guerreros were the favorites and did not answer. Veracruz extended its winless streak to 20 games in league play, while Santos Laguna continues to be in the playoff race with 15 points.
