Atlas hosted Cruz Azul at the Estadio Jalisco for a match in Week 10 of the Liga MX 2019 Clausura this Friday, March 8, 2019. Both teams were in dire need of the three points heading into the clash as both sides were struggling in the 2019 Clausura season.
Atlas was on a horrendous four-game losing streak and was unable to get out of the rut as the team stayed consistent with its struggles. Julio Cesar Dominguez gave the visitors an early lead as the Mexican defender made a run up the field and was able to get past Jose Hernandez. The Atlas goalkeeper could have done better son the play as he grazed the sphere and could have possibly made the save.
The game stayed quiet for the rest of the second half as Atlas controlled possession, but could not do much with the ball with zero total shots. The second half was distinct from the first as Atlas was much more aggressive, but could still not get past Jesus Corona in net.
Los Rojinegros controlled possession, but this worked in Cruz Azul’s favor as Los Cementeros extended their lead in the 52nd minute. Peruvian midfielder Yoshimar Yotun made an incredible run from the middle of the pitch and released a powerful shot from outside of the box that found the back of the net.
The game cooled down after that goal as Cruz Azul did a wonderful job of hanging onto the lead. Atlas had a chance to score in the 90th minute of the clash, but Juan Pablo Vigon pushed the ball into the net with his hand and was given a red card.
