This Wednesday, December 19, 2018, Cruz Azul officially announced the signing of Jonathan Rodriguez from Santos Laguna. The move was a bit of a surprising one as the Uruguayan forward had a spectacular season with Los Guerreros, scoring nine goals in the 2018 Apertura season.
Rodriguez also picked up three assists during the campaign for a total of 12 goal contributions for the Celestial Warriors. The 25-year-old attacker had been with Santos Laguna since the 2016 Apertura tournament and had scored 27 goals in league play since that time.
“El Cabecita” had previously played in his native Uruguay with Penarol from 2013-2015 and also had a short stint in Europe with Portuguese giants Benfica and Deportivo La Coruna in Spain. Rodriguez has a lot to offer to this Cruz Azul team as he would have been the team’s top scorer in the 2018 Apertura with his nine goals.
The South American forward should link up well in the attack with players like Milton Caraglio, Edgar Mendez and his countryman Martin Cauteruccio. Santos Laguna should also desperatley be looking for a suitable replacement for “Cabecita” as he played a vital role to the team’s success this season.
