Atletico San Luis managed to defeat Dorados de Sinaloa by an aggregate score of 4-3 in the 2018 Apertura Ascenso MX final. Los Gladiadores were up against the wall with a 1-0 deficit heading into the clash, but provided a hard-fought effort to get the title.
Atletico San Luis was not always known by this name and it did not always use red and white jerseys. Before the team was simply known as San Luis and the team sported gold and blue jerseys that a lot of the fans still identify with.
However, the team became a struggling franchise until it had these changes with the ownership of Atletico Madrid. The Spanish giants started a longterm project with this franchise back in 2013 and now the results are starting to show.
The team even counts with a few Spanish players in Pedro Alvarez, Unai Bilbao, Enrique Lopez and Ian Gonzalez, who all started the final against Dorados. Spanish players are not common in Mexican football and even less so in the Ascenso MX, so one can only imagine what type of players might be brought in if Los Tuneros can get to the Liga MX.
The Atletico Madrid investment group certainly knows the financial potential of a Liga MX team and will surely invest heavily into the team if it can gain promotion. The fanbase is also there for Atletico San Luis as the fans are highly engaged and very passionate.

There were a few unfortunate incidents in the final against Dorados, but there is no denying that the people of San Luis Potosi care about their football team. Considering this and the Atletico Madrid ownership it will be extremely intriguing to see how the team progresses from this title-win.
San Luis must now either win the 2018 Clausura tournament or the Ascenso MX final to gain promotion at the end of next season. Los Potosinos are one step closer to first-division football and have plenty of room and tools to grow once they reach the top-flight league.
