The Tijuana Xolos relieved Diego Cocca of his duties this Tuesday, October 30, 2018, and named Franky Oviedo as the interim manager this Wednesday, October 31, 2018. Oviedo will likely just round out the season and go back to his role in Club Tijuana’s youth academy after this season.

The Xolos are now in the search for a new project and a new manager to lead the team after two unsuccessful stints with Eduardo Coudet and Diego Cocca. The border city team has not performed consistently since Miguel Herrera was at the club and it is unclear as to what options Xolos will pursue.

Xolos’ affiliate team Dorados de Sinaloa has been on the rise recently now in a playoff position after Diego Maradona took charge of the club. “El Diez” was linked as an option to manage Club Tijuana given his recent success, but it now seems that he has been discarded completely.

In a press conference to present the new interim manager Franky Oviedo, Xolos’ sporting director Ignacio Palou denied interest in Diego Maradona. Palou said, “We’re focused on Xolos and Diego (Maradona) has a contract and a project with Dorados, so we are not thinking of him an option for next season.”

Maradona has five wins and just one loss as the manager of Dorados de Sinaloa and has made the team from Culiacan one of the favorites in the Ascenso MX. It will be intriguing to see if Xolos or any other Liga MX clubs do end up considering the Argentine icon as a serious option.
