Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet has spoken out about his relationship with the Reds first-choice Alisson. Mignolet was demoted to being second choice goalkeeper for the Reds back in January and was replaced between the sticks by Loris Karius.
Karius maintained the first-choice goalkeeping position at the Reds till the end of last season. However, his time at the club was virtually ended during the Champions League final against Real Madrid. He committed two basic goalkeeping errors during the game and these gifted Madrid with two goals. Los Blancos went on to win the match 3-1.
The goalkeeping position has been an issue at Liverpool since former first-choice Pepe Reina left the club. Jurgen Klopp finally decided to swoop this summer and bring in Alisson from Roma.
It was widely expected that Mignolet would leave in January in search of regular first-team football. However, after Karius joined Besiktas on loan, the Belgian was retained as Klopp’s backup option for this season.
This would have certainly made Mignolet unhappy. It will affect his chances of being regularly called-up for the Belgian national team squads.
However, when reflecting on his relationship with Alisson, Mignolet highlighted that there is no problem between the two.
As quoted by The Sun, he said: “Me and Alisson work together on a good basis,”
“Our relationship has been good ever since we came together and then we’ve got a few younger boys who are pushing us forward as well.
“We have a good group and the only thing we can do is put out the best goalkeeper for Liverpool. In the end, that’s the most important thing.
