Wolves star Raul Jimenez is hoping to break Javier Hernandez’ goal scoring record for the Mexican national team.
The 30-year-old Hernandez boasts 50 goals from 105 appearances for his country since starting his international career in 2009.
Hernandez has opted not to represent Mexico during the upcoming international games against Uruguay and the United States. Instead, he is hoping to spend more time at his club, West Ham. The Hammers have started the new Premier League season and have lost all four of the games that they have played so far. Jimenez got one over his international teammate Chicharito last weekend as Wolves managed a 1-0 win against the Hammers.
Things do not get any easier for Hernandez’ struggling club, as their next three League fixtures are against the likes of Everton, Chelsea and Manchester United. If they fail to improve considerably in the immediate future, they could be in for a relegation battle.
The 27-year-old Jimenez boasts 13 goals internationally from 65 games. Jimenez is hitting the peak of his career and could score many goals over the next two years. In spite of this, it is hard to see him breaking Hernandez’ record.
He is, however, confident that he can play at the highest level for another eight years and will try to break the record Hernandez set.
He told Press Association Sport as quoted by The Daily Mail: “I have eight years? I’ll be 35 if my legs stand up to it when I have my last years in the national team. Well, I’m going to try it – that’s my goal and maybe I can do it.
“We’ve got Uruguay and the United States and he will take a break because of the World Cup.
“They called me and I said yes and we’re always trying to be in the squad so there’s competition.”
