Liga MX: Gerardo Espinoza sacked as Atlas manager

Atlas vs Morelia

This Monday, September 3, 2018, Atlas officially announced that the team had parted ways with Gerardo Espinoza given the poor results after eight games in the Liga MX 2018 Apertura. The 36-year-old became the third manager this season to lose his job after Robert Siboldi of Santos Laguna and Guillermo Vazquez of Veracruz.

Espinoza had taken over as the Atlas’ boss late last season and failed to win a game in this 2018 Apertura, eight games in. Los Rojinegros had some serious offensive struggles as they did not score their first goal until this past weekend, 630 minutes into the tournament.

Atlas is currently the last-place team in the 2018 Apertura with just two points and Espinoza’s only notable achievement was completing the youth player rule for the semester. Raul Chabrand Manrique will serve as the interim manager until the team from Guadalajara finds a full-time replacement.

Atlas has plenty of talent on its team and clearly has a project in place with Rafael Marquez as the sporting director. Los Zorros were able to bring in centre-back Nicolas Pareja from Sevilla recently and it will be interesting to see who will serve as the new manager.
