Everton manager Marco Silva has instructed the South American trio of Yerry Mina, Bernard and Richarlison to improve their grasp of the English language.
All three players arrived at Goodison Park this summer. Richarlison arrived from Watford while Mina arrived from Barcelona and Bernard as a free-agent after his contract with Shakhtar Donetsk came to an end at the end of last season.
Out of the three, Richarlison will be at a slight advantage, since he has already been living in England for over a year.
The Brazilian has started life at the Toffees with a bang. He started the season by scoring a brace during the Toffees’ 2-2 draw against Wolverhampton last weekend and followed that up with another goal during the club’s 2-1 victory over Southampton on Saturday.
While Richarlison has been playing well, it does, however, appear that he does often use his native Portuguese language while in training. The trio has been ordered by Silva to get familiar with the English language, as the manager does not want cliques to develop within his squad.
While discussing the situation, Silva said, as quoted by The Guardian: “Richarlison has settled in well, he is a fantastic professional and a good boy,”
“But he has to learn as much English as he can and we are pushing him on that because it is important for him and for us. He is doing it but he needs to improve his English. That applies to me as well. I am learning it all the time. I have already told Bernard and Mina. They have to learn English as well.”
He added: “Everybody likes him and he is enjoying the environment. He performed very well last week but we have to be calm with him. He is a young boy with a big talent but we cannot put all the headlights on Richarlison.”
