Marcelo Bielsa starts tenure at Leeds United with impressive win against Stoke City

One of the biggest storylines in English football this season had nothing to do with the premier league and rather with The Championship as Marcelo Bielsa was appointed as Leeds United’s new manager. “El Loco” and The Whites were due for a very tough first game of the season as they faced recently relegated side Stoke City.

Eiland Road was ready to receive the Argentine mastermind and their beloved Leeds United for a new season. It was unclear as to how Bielsa would adapt to English football, especially to The Championship and to a team like Leeds with the very demanding fanbase and pressure of a “big” club.

The South American boss had struggled at his most recent job in the French Ligue 1 with Lille and was now going to face much more pressure. Bielsa and his players did just fine as Peacocks had a very comfortable 3-1 win against The Potters.

Polish midfielder Mateusz Klich started it off early with a goal in the 15th minute and Pablo Hernandez then Extended Leeds’ lead to 2-0 with a goal in stoppage time just before the end of the first half. Stoke City tried to climb back with a penalty by Benik Afobe in the second minute, but then Liam Cooper sealed the game with Leeds’ third goal in the 57th minute.

The Whites were able to hang on to get the three points and make Marcelo Bielsa’s debut in English football a successful one. “El Loco” used a 4-1-4-1 formation, but he will likely experiment and tinker with his formation and lineups throughout the season. Stoke City is one of the favorites to achieve promotion so the win was a very respectable achievement by the Argentine manager.
