Celtic dealt blow as Rodgers’ midfield target leaves for abroad outfit

According to Sky Sports News HQ, Sunderland midfielder and Celtic target Jack Rodwell has gone on trial at Dutch club Vitesse Arnhem, with the English Championship outfit looking to terminate his contract.

The former Everton and Manchester City man earns £70,000 at the Stadium of Light, and is surplus to requirements following a sustained poor form.

Nevertheless, Celtic were linked with a return for Rodwell’s signature after failing in an attempt to land him last summer.

Manager Brendan Rodgers believes he can help resurrect the career of the one-time England international at Ibrox, but it remains to be seen if his gamble would have ever paid off.

Celtic are looking to strengthen their midfield this window, and a loan deal for Rodwell was being mulled over.

However, they could be dodging a bullet as even his potential Eredivisie suitors are looking to hand him a trial first before deciding on a deal.
