Newcastle United reportedly keen on January swoop for top-quality La Liga striker

According to The Mirror, Newcastle United have registered interest in recruiting the services of Atletico Madrid striker Kevin Gameiro this month.

The 30-year-old has fallen way down the pecking order this term, with the return of Diego Costa proving to be the final straw.

Gameiro wants to leave the La Liga giants, and prefers a move to the Premier League.

Alongside the Magpies, Crystal Palace, Swansea City and Southampton are also interested in signing the France international before the January transfer window closes.

Newcastle have struggled in the final third this term, producing just a goal per game on the average, and manager Rafa Benitez wants another striker to help improve his side’s survival chances with goals.

Gameiro fits the bill having banged in 24 goals for Atletico since the start of last season, but he could be out of Newcastle’s reach given his preference for a top 6 side.

The Europa League winner cost Rojiblancos £30million when he arrived from Sevilla 2 years ago, and would cost within that range right now.

Cash-strapped Toons’ only chance of landing Gameiro will be on a loan deal, but it remains to be seen if Atletico are open to that option.
