Aston Villa chief Keith Wyness has revealed that the Villains considered a move for former Manchester United and Arsenal forward Robin Van Persie during the January transfer window, but eventually decided against it.

Van Persie who scored 144 Premier League goals for Arsenal and United between 2004 and 2014 is now 34-years-old and has just joined Dutch club Feyenoord.

The Villains did, however, consider a move for the veteran forward, as manager Steve Bruce looked to bolster his options up front.

Villa chief executive Wyness revealed that the club considered signing RVP during his phone-in on BBC WM Sport’s popular football phone-in.

“We’ve been looking at big names. We looked at Robin Van Persie. Players of that sort of ilk,” Wyness said.

“We looked at him, but decided he wasn’t the right type of player.”

“The football. That was the key factor in that decision.”

“We decided not to pursue that probably about two weeks ago.”

“It’s that sort of level – we’ve been scouring Europe, everywhere, for players that can actually make a difference.”
