Liverpool dealt huge blow in pursuit of top midfield target after admitting defeat

Liverpool have accepted defeat in the pursuit of Schalke midfielder Leon Goretzka after Bayern Munich hinted that the Germany international is bound to sign for them.

The 22-year-old is expected to soon confirm his departure to the Allianz Arena ahead of a summer switch with just 6 months left on his deal with Schalke.

The Reds have had Goretzka on their radar since last summer, keeping in constant touch with his representatives in order to beat suitors to his signature.

However, they are now set to turn their attention towards other targets ahead of the summer transfer window.

Despite losing Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona and failing in their attempt to bring in Naby Keita RB Leipzig this window instead of summer, the club aren’t looking to add any midfielder to their ranks this month.

Emre Can is being linked with an exit to Juventus, and reinforcements will be needed should he leave at the end of the season.

Missing out on Goretzka, though, is a big blow to Liverpool given the qualities the Germany international brings to the table.
