West Ham United reportedly keen on £6million-rated Portuguese League-winning winger

According to the Northern Echo, West Ham are interested in bringing Newcastle winger Christian Atsu to the London Stadium this month.

The Hammers want reinforcements on the flanks after Michail Antonio sustained a groin injury that could sideline him for a while.

As a result, manager David Moyes reckons the Toons star, who made his loan from Chelsea permanent last summer for £6.2million, will be a perfect backup and competition.

Despite a return of only 2 goals and 2 assists in 19 league games from the 26-year-old Ghanaian international, he remains an integral member of manager Rafa Benitez’s squad, and it will be very difficult to prise him away.

With his starting berth guaranteed at Newcastle, it is also unlikely that Atsu will be keen to move to a star-studded side like West Ham where he’s not assured of one.

However, nothing can be ruled out as far as transfer goes, especially with the Toons in need of cash to boost their squad.

With his pace and direct style of play – which have seen him complete 23 of 46 take-ons attempted – the ex-Porto wideman is a capable replacement for the injury-prone Antonio, but it remains to be seen if a move can go through.
