The Birmingham Mail reports that Aston Villa outcast Birkir Bjarnason is on his way out from Villa Park this January, with Serie A club SPAL showing enthusiasm to bring the player back to Italy.
The 29-year-old midfielder arrived from Basel last summer but struggled to adapt to English football, as he has only managed to collect nine appearances this season.
The Iceland international already had flourishing spells in Italy, as he performed successfully for Sampdoria and Pescara in the past. The player himself has reiterated his desire to return to Italy, where he experienced the most successful moments of his career.
Villa manager Steve Bruce would welcome Bjarnason’ departure, as he’s trying to collect the funds to finance January signings. Birmingham based club would like to bring Daniel Amartey from Leicester to strengthen the midfield.
SPAL officials are searching for reinforcements in January, as the club looks to enhance their chances to avoid Serie A relegation this year.
