This Saturday, January 6, 2018 (5:00 PM Pacific) Monterrey will host Monarcas Morelia at the Estadio BBVA Bancomer for a game in the first round of the Liga MX Clausura 2018. Both teams made the playoffs in the Apertura 2017 and inclusively faced off in the semifinals of the tournament, which should make for an exciting game.

Monterrey was the best team in the Apertura 2017 regular season but ended up losing the final of the competition against Tigres UANL. Los Rayados did not make many moves this offseason as the team only added Uruguayan winger Jonathan Urretavisacaya and Mexican fullback Efrain Velarde.

The Northern side also had some departures that included Mexican fullback Luis Fuentes and Argentine midfielder Neri Cardozo. Monterrey should still be one of the top teams in the league with an improved squad from the previous tournament.

Monarcas Morelia was one of the biggest surprises of the Apertura 2017 finishing in fourth place. La Monarquia was on the cusp of relegation less than a year ago and now are considered a playoff contender under the leadership of manager Roberto Hernandez. The team has not changed much and has added Peruvian forward Ray Sandoval to go along with the Peruvians already on the team, Andy Polo and Raul Ruidiaz.

The team from Michoacán did struggle defensively at times and failing to add a defender this offseason could back to hurt the team. The game should be a very close encounter but Monterrey has to be the favorites with the home-field advantage.
