Ex-Everton and Sunderland star released by current club

Former Everton and Sunderland midfielder Steven Pienaar has been released by South African club Bidvest Wits after failing to make an impact at the club during several months.

The 35-year old former South African national team skipper opted to return to his homeland at the end of last season after being released by Sunderland.

He however struggled at Wits who are the reigning ABSA Premiership Champions in South Africa and managed just four starts and six appearances off the bench in 18 Premiership and League Cup games before the mid-season December break.

Wits launched a disastrous defence of their League title and are currently in last position on the ABSA Premierships standings.

“The signing of Steven did not work so we have parted ways and wish him all the best in the future,” coach Gavin Hunt told the South African media.

“Propping up the table has forced us to make changes to our squad. We lack depth and need to beef up our squad during the January transfer window.”
