Liverpool reportedly boosted in hopes of signing international defender

According to a report published by The Express, Liverpool have received a boost to their chances of landing Lazio defender Stefan De Vrij during the January transfer window.

Liverpool’s defensive frailties were once again highlighted on Friday night as they squandered a 2-0 half-time lead to draw 3-3 against Arsenal and this has fuelled speculation regarding them making a move for De Vrij.

The 25-year old De Vrij has been in fine form this season and netted three goals from 20 appearances for his club.

His current contract expires in June 2018 and he has been strongly linked with a move away from Lazio during the January transfer window.

As a boost to Liverpool, Lazio president Claudio Lotito has now admitted that he will not stand in the way of De Vrij should he wish to leave next month.

He said: “We have always said that people come and go but Lazio remains. It depends on the ethics and behaviour of the player.

“As a club we have always behaved very well towards the players and we’ll see what the players choose. We are used to enforcing our rights whilst always respecting the rules.”
