According to the Daily Mail, Newcastle are interested in the services of Leicester City striker Islam Slimani ahead of the winter transfer window.
However, they face stiff competition for the services of the 29-year-old who arrived King Power Stadium from Sporting Lisbon for £28million last summer.
Watford, Stoke City and West Brom are also keen on the forward.
The Toons tried to land Slimani during the summer transfer window, but couldn’t as Leicester weren’t willing to let him go.
However, further lack of playing time has made him surplus to requirements to the plans of manager Claude Puel.
Slimani has struggled to replicate the explosive form of his Lisbon days where he scored 27 league goals in 33 games in his last season.
Nevertheless, he has had a decent return at Leicester, as in 41 appearances he has managed 12 goals and 6 assists, including 3 goals in 9 appearances this season.
The Algerian international, with 27 goals in 56 games for his country, is definitely an upgrade on the striking duo of Joselu and Aleksandar Mitrovic, and could be a great signing for the Toons.
Newcastle badly need goals if they are prevent returning to the Championship come May, and Slimani seems like a quality finisher capable of delivering the goods.
