Aston Villa captain John Terry has revealed that he came really close to joining a Premier League club but could not fathom the possibility of playing against his former club Chelsea.
Terry ended his 19-year spell with Chelsea at the end of last season and opted to join Villa during the summer transfer window.
Swansea were one of the teams that were keen on recruiting the veteran defender and he spoke to Swans manager Paul Clement who is a former Chelsea coach.
In the end however, Terry could not join Clement’s club as he did not want to face the possibility of playing against Chelsea.
“I didn’t want to play in the Prem, that was a big thing for me, I didn’t want to play against Chelsea,” Terry said.
“But obviously I gave Clement the service because I felt I owed that to him with what he done for me, how he helped me growing up.
“But we met and having not wanted to play against Chelsea he pushed me really close as the way he dealt with me. But in the end I couldn’t do it.”
