Jenas backs Liverpool to address this issue in January

Jermaine Jenas has backed Liverpool to bolster their defence during the January transfer window.

“Their league defensive form hasn’t been that bad,” Jenas told BT Sport.

“In the Champions League, the standout fixture was conceding the three goals in Seville. They will strengthen in January.

“Whether the players he brings in are eligible to play in the Champions League, we’ll see. But I don’t think many teams will relish going to Anfield to play them.”

The Merseyside club struggled defensively during the early parts of the season and conceded 16 goals from their opening nine Premier League games which raised questions over the ability of the likes of Dejan Lovren, Ragnar Klavan and Joel Matip.

Following their 4-1 defeat against Tottenham, they have however shown improvement and have conceded just four times from their past several games.

The Reds were strongly linked with the signature of Southampton defender Virgil Van Dijk during the summer transfer window but in the end, they failed to get a deal done.
