Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand believes Liverpool need to strengthen two key positions to become more competitive and challenge for major trophies.

Liverpool have been in really good shape of late, with the Reds currently enjoying an unbeaten run of nine games – with their last defeat coming to title challenger Tottenham Hotspur.

This unbeaten run has seen Liverpool play some breathtaking football, which has left the Reds’ faithful very excited about the future and the fans are finally optimistic over their team’s chances of potential success in various competitions.

This exciting brand of football has convinced many fans and pundits to argue that this Liverpool squad is probably the strongest and the most balanced that is has ever been in recent memory but former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand, believes that there are still areas that Jurgen Klopp’s men need to strengthen to be truly challenging for honors.

Ferdinand told BT Sports, “I think they need a keeper. I think Joe Gomez at centre-half and Trent Alexander-Arnold playing at right-back and then add in another centre-half to that, I think they’ve got a real good team there.

“Because you look at their bench today as well, there’s a lot of quality on that bench. Sturridge is on the bench, he’ll be an England squad player. Oxlade-Chamberlain, how much was he? £35m? Adam Lallana to come back into it. It’s a good squad, it’s just slightly weak in really important areas.”
