Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand believes that Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp must bring in two new players to his squad during the January transfer window and one of those must be Virgil Van Dijk.

Ferdinand has been impressed with the Liverpool squad who are currently on a run of good form though he does believe that they need to bring in a new goalkeeper and central defender.

He believes that this will also allow them to progress to the deep stages of this season’s Champions League.

The Reds attack has looked promising with Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino forming a lethal combination.

They have however looked shaky at the back at times and Ferdinand is certainly justified in calling for them to make reinforcements there.

“I think they need a keeper as well (as a centre-back), I think a keeper would be a great addition to that squad as well,” he told BT Sport.

“I think (Joe) Gomez at centre-half and Trent Alexander-Arnold playing at right-back and adding another centre-half to that, I think they would then have a real, real good team there.

“If you look at their bench today as well, there’s a lot of quality on that bench. (Daniel) Sturridge came off the bench, he’d be an England squad player, (Alex) Oxlade-Chamberlain how much did they pay? £35million, (Adam) Lallana to come back into that.”
