Newcastle reportedly keen on Celtic defensive summer target ahead of January transfer window

As per Football Ghana, Newcastle are monitoring Al Qadsia centre-back Rashid Sumaila ahead of the January transfer window, but they could face stiff competition from Celtic.

The Scotland giants were keen on the Ghanaian international during the summer transfer window, and are still interested in him after their failure to bring in defensive reinforcements exposed them in Europe.

Sumaila is also attracting a couple of Championship sides due to his impressive performances in the Kuwaiti VIVA League.

The 24-year-old has won 3 official man of the match awards and made the official league team of the week thrice.

The former Mamelodi Sundowns defender is a commanding presence at the back, as he stands at 6 ft 4 in.

Given how Newcastle have been less impressive of recent in terms of leaking goals, Sumaila could be the perfect partner for Jamaal Lascelles in the heart of the defence.

Celtic on the other hand are in dire need of backups in the position, and the abilities of the Ghanaian tick the boxes.

Alongside the likes of Wolves, the Magpies and Hoops could have a huge battle on their hands in their pursuit of Sumaila come January.
