Leeds and Birmingham battling it out to sign experienced EPL midfielder

Leeds United and Birmingham City are said to be among the clubs that are interested in signing Newcastle outcast Jack Colback during the January transfer window.

Rafa Benitez has already made it clear that Colback is surplus to requirements at the Magpies and it is likely that he will be leaving the club during the January transfer window.

Benitez said recently: “He knew from the beginning that we have four or five midfielders and I didn’t want to have six.

“We could not manage to move any more players out at the end of the transfer window and you can’t train as well with as many players around in the same position.

“I did not want that. We have enough players in that position without Merino – Diame, Shelvey, Hayden and Saivet, even Mbemba who can also play in midfield. He played there in the Africa Cup of Nations.”

Recent reports have suggested that scouts from Birmingham and Leeds were in attendance to watch Colback in action for Newcastle’s second string team this week as they went on to defeat Reading 4-1.

Both Leeds and Birmingham have been underwhelming in terms of their performances recently and are likely to look to bolster their sides in January.
