Former Everton star Yakubu has announced his retirement from professional football on his 35th birthday following a career which spanned 20 years.
The Nigerian international last played for Coventry in the League One and has ended his career with 96 goals. Yakubu had been a free agent after Coventry terminated his contract.
He had only made three appearances for them before this action was taken. Coventry ended up being relegated to the fourth tier of English football shortly after.
Yakubu was on the books of Everton between 2007 and 2011 and during his time at the club he scored 25 goals from 82 League appearances.
He told Sky Sports, “I would like to officially announce my retirement from professional football today.”
He also made 73 League appearances for Middlesbrough and 67 for Portsmouth with his last coming for Blackburn Rovers in 2012.
He also retires as the third all-time top scorer for the Nigerian national team, having scored 21 times from 57 appearances for his country.
