West Ham defender Jose Fonte has spoken out about claims that he was possibly going to join Liverpool during the January transfer window of 2017 and dismissed it as “paper talk”.
The veteran Portugal defender surprisingly left Southampton during the January transfer window in 2017 and joined West Ham for a fee believed to be in the region of £8 million.
During his time at the Saints, Fonte went on to establish himself as a fan-favorite and arguably one of the best players for them during the modern generation.
Fonte had also been linked with a move to Liverpool in January 2017. The Mirror had reported that the Reds wanted to recruit the player in order to bolster their defence.
Fonte has now responded to the rumors that were linking him with a move to Jurgen Klopp’s side and dismissed them by saying, “It’s newspaper stuff, isn’t it? I don’t know. It didn’t happen, but a lot of ex-teammates went there.”
