The Liga MX playoffs or Liguilla is upon us and we now know which eight teams will battle it out for the title. There are some intriguing matchups in the quarterfinals of the competition, among them is the game between Leon and Tigres UANL this Wednesday at the Nou Camp in Leon. This matchup seems like it could be among the best but here are three reasons why Tigres will have the upper hand against Los Esmeraldas.
1.Nou Camp
The first game between the two teams will be at Leon’s home the Nou Camp but this does not necessarily favor La Fiera. Gustavo Diaz’s men did get a slim 1-0 win against Tigres UANL at the Nou Camp when the teams met during the regular Apertura tournament but it was only one of four home wins this season.
Leon had nine home games in this Apertura, won those four but lost another four and tied against Cruz Azul as well. It is clear that the Nou Camp does not have the same presence like other Liga MX stadiums like Monterrey’s BBVA Bancomer or Tigres’ Estadio Universitario.
2.Recent Form
Yes, Tigres did lose 2-0 in the crucial Clasico Regio against Monterrey to end the Apertura 2017 regular season but Leon did not end the season on a high note either. Los Panzas Verdes finished off the tournament with two consecutive losses, the team looked bleak in both. First was a 2-1 loss against one of the team’s biggest rivals Club Tijuana, then came a 2-0 loss to Chivas of Guadalajara at the Nou Camp.
The defense looked flawed and the offense and midfield could not generate much of anything going forward in these final two games. Also, worth mentioning is that Tigres UANL had four consecutive victories before that loss to Monterrey and the team only conceded one goal in that four-game winning streak.
3.Leadership
Both teams have very experienced rosters with players that have been on the biggest stage of Mexican soccer before. What really separates the teams is the managers, while Leon has Gustavo Diaz, who will be in his first Liguilla, Tigres has Ricardo Ferretti. Diaz has created a very attractive style of play at Leon but it is nothing that “El Tuca” has not been able to deal with in the past. The matchup should still be highly entertaining but the team from Nuevo Leon should be able to get past the team from Leon.
