Joey Barton has accused Everton majority shareholder Farhad Moshiri of embarrassing the club by attempting to recruit Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone.
Speaking on the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast, Barton said: “Diego Simeone? As if he’s going to join Everton! They’re not even in the Champions League, what is he going to leave Atletico Madrid for?
“It was embarrassing for the football club and embarrassing for the fans. Liverpool have got enough to laugh at without that load of nonsense coming out of the club.”
Simeone was reportedly the priority target of the Toffees after they sacked Ronald Koeman following their 5-2 defeat against Arsenal last month.
Simeone however shows no interest in wanting to leave Atletico with whom he has done an impressive job.
Everton are meanwhile still yet to appoint a full-time manager almost a month after the sacking of Koeman.
Current interim boss David Unsworth has been linked with the job as well as former Manchester United boss Louis Van Gaal and current Watford boss Marco Silva.
