Newcastle star reportedly being monitored by Aston Villa ahead of January window

According to The Sun, Championship side Aston Villa are eyeing a January swoop for Newcastle goalie Karl Darlow.

The 27-year-old was a main stay in manager Rafa Benitez’s starting XI last term, helping the Magpies to Premier League promotion.

However, he’s yet to appear in the league this term, with his only game thus far coming in the Carabao Cup second-round defeat to Nottingham Forest in August.

Darlow is firmly behind Rob Elliot in the pecking order, and is keen on leaving in January, as the Magpies could acquired a new keeper over the winter transfer window.

The Villans first choice Sam Johnstone is wanted by West Brom, and his departure would see the need for an experienced goalie – a box Darlow ticks.

A return to the Championship to link up with promotion-chasing Villa will definitely entice the English shotstopper who isn’t happy with his situation at Newcastle, and cashing in on him wouldn’t be a bad idea as he’s clearly surplus to requirements.

England youth international Freddie Woodman is definitely ready to challenge for a spot in the first team, and would prove to be a capable backup and competition for Elliot going forward.
