This Friday, Puebla will host a team from the same city Lobos BUAP at the Estadio Cuauhtémoc. On paper, the match is not the most enticing game this weekend but there are several reasons to watch this encounter, here are three.
1.Rivalry
This match at the Estadio Cuauhtémoc will be a historic one as it will be the first Clasico Poblano in Liga MX history. This will be the first time these two teams meet in an official match in Mexico’s top division and both will battle for the pride of the city of Puebla. La Franja is the more historical team, with 73 years in Mexican soccer, two league titles and five Copa MX titles under its belt. Puebla has been dropping in popularity recently with its recent struggles and do struggle to get people into its beautiful stadium that sits over 40 thousand spectators.
Lobos BUAP is the new exciting team in the city that has been exceeding expectations but it still does struggle to get many people in its stadium. Still, the university side attracts young people into its stadium and is a recently promoted team that is just starting to make a buzz in the city. The Cuauhtémoc will surely get a good crowd in this Friday and the winner could influence, who younger fans start supporting in Puebla.
2.Relegation
Both teams are still fighting relegation and apart from the rivalry should put in a competitive effort because of it. Puebla is currently in 15th place on the relegation table with 101 points, currently 13 points ahead of last place Veracruz. Yes, this is quite a distant margin but if Los Camoteros lose and Veracruz wins this week there will only be a 10 point difference between the two teams heading into the Clausura 2017 tournament.
The win can influence the way Puebla heads into the next transfer window as it may try to make influential signings to try and be competitive in the next tournament. Lobos BUAP is currently 13th on the relegation table with 20 points but as it is a recently promoted side every game is vital and could have a huge shift in the table. Both a win or loss could make a significant impact and the Canines should be eager to walk away with some points from the game.
3.Managers
Perhaps, the most intriguing thing to look at in this game is the clash between two very distinct managers from one another. Puebla is led by experienced 69-year-old boss Enrique Meza while Lobos BUAP is under the leadership of 38-year-old Rafael Puente Jr. Meza is a tactician and is very patent in his approach, using very precise moves to get to the objective. Puente Jr. is quite different as he has developed a very offensive style of play, still playing smart but at times being exposed because of it. This match will be a clash of ideologies, the veteran against the rookie, it is one of the more interesting factors of the game and it should produce a highly entertaining encounter.
