Newcastle’s and Leeds’ chances of landing Liverpool striker Danny Ings in January appear to have been dealt a huge blow, as betting site Bet Victor has named Derby County favourites to get the former Burnley star.
The Magpies have struggled in front of goal since returning to the topflight, while the Whites haven’t been able to replace the goals of Chris Wood.
Both identified Ings as their top target for the January transfer window, but they might have to search for other options if Derby are indeed willing to pull out all the stops to land their man.
While the 25-year-old, who bagged 43 goals in 130 matches for the Clarets, still has a chance to rediscover his once-impressive form if afforded regular football, that neither Newcastle nor Leeds can guarantee him a starting berth makes the chances of eventually losing him hurt less.
Ing’s reported £60,000-a-week wages could also be a huge issue, though Liverpool will pay a part if a loan exit is agreed.
There are definitely other affordable and quality striking options for both Newcastle and Leeds, and their scouts will have to keep their eyes out for one.
