Southgate compares this England star to Gerard Pique

England national team boss Gareth Southgate has said that former Everton star John Stones can go on to become one of the best defenders in Europe.

Many questioned Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola’s decision to purchase Stones from Everton last summer after City finished the season without silverware.

The 23 year old has however managed to establish himself as a key member of the City first team this season who are in lethal form, having yet to be defeated both in the Premier League and in Europe.

Southgate said: “He has as much composure as any defender I’ve seen in Europe. I saw Jerome Boateng at Manchester City when he was a kid and nobody would have predicted him going on to do what he has done.

“I saw Gerard Pique at Middlesbrough when he was playing at Manchester United and he was at fault for a couple of the goals. You never would have seen him being where he was a couple of years later.”
