Newcastle will attempt to return to winning ways after the international break when league action resumes with a visit to Old Trafford.
A late goal at the weekend saw Bournemouth condemn the Magpies to their 5th loss of the campaign, and it will take a lot of hardwork to prevent Manchester United from inflicting yet another defeat on them.
Despite a 2-week break ahead of the crucial clash, Newcastle are sweating on the fitness of Jamaal Lascelles, Christian Atsu and Mikel Merino, and the absence of the trio could damage the side’s chances of getting a result.
The skipper sustained an ankle knock which forced him out of action against the Cherries, and he had to leave the stadium with the aid of crutches and a protective boot on his left foot after the game.
Atsu was also withdrawn, and manager Rafa Benitez claimed: “Jamaal, will have his ankle (assessed), with Atsu, he felt something, but it’s too early to tell.”
Merino is certain to miss the game as he is set to be on the sidelines until next month due to a back injury.
The manager said of his situation: “We have to start treatment. It depends how he responds to the treatment.”
Having lost both of their last 2 league games, preventing a 3rd straight loss could prove herculean, with key members in the 3 key areas of the pitch likely to miss the game against the Red Devils.
