Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet has revealed that he was left speechless when he found out that he would serve as captain for the Reds first team during their 4-1 victory over West Ham during the weekend.
The Reds went on to win the match after convincingly outplaying the Hammers and winning through a brace from Mohamed Salah as well as further goals from Joel Matip and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.
Mignolet has been widely criticized this season as a result of his club’s performances defensively and he also has the worst saves percentage of any keeper in the top flight. The match this weekend marked the first time that Mignolet has captained the team since arriving from Sunderland in 2013.
He said: “Only an hour before the game when we arrived in the dressing room. I was a bit surprised. It’s a big honour. I can’t grasp it as of yet. It’s something I was dreaming about when I was a small kid – to be a captain of a Premier League team. To do that as a Liverpool player is unbelievable.”
