Everton are reportedly keen on appointing Burnley manager Sean Dyche as the successor to fired boss Ronald Koeman, and while he appears to be an excellent choice, having him take charge at the Goodison Park at this point of the season might turn out to be a disaster.
The 46-year-old has done impressively well with the Clarets having guided them to 2 Premier League promotions in his 5 years at Turf Moor.
That Dyche has managed to do pretty well with very little to spend definitely was one of the features that attracted Everton, and it can’t be denied he’s a great tactician.
However, the current Burnley side have spent the last 5 years perfecting their solid defensive style of play and ability to convert the few chances that come their way.
Having the former Watford manager take charge of the Toffees now doesn’t make sense, as any team, and a particularly defensively poor Everton, will struggle with the sudden demands of Dyche’s training and drilling methods.
Having players play a particular pattern takes time, and appointing someone of Dyche’s reputation and style makes more sense ahead of a campaign.
Not to say the Englishman will attempt to turn Everton into a purely defensive-minded if he takes over, but it will definitely be the bed-rock of his job, and it’s not one that gets perfected overnight.
2 games aren’t enough to judge interim boss David Unsworth, and with the former youth manager keen to impress, having him until the end of the campaign might be worth a gamble.
By then, Everton might decide to eventually bring Dyche on board as it’s a perfect time to appoint such a manager.
Now might turn out to be a disaster.
