EPL legend claims no manager can rectify this Everton weakness

Everton suffered their 6th league defeat of the season at the weekend following a 2-nil loss to Leicester City at the King Power Stadium.

Having been eliminated from the League Cup by Chelsea during the week, interim manager David Unsworth has now lost his 2 games in charge of the Toffees, and former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher feels he’s not to be blamed for the results.

The Sky Sports pundit believes not even another manager would have gotten a result against the Foxes, as Everton’s main problem this term has been a weak rearguard.

In the words of Carragher, who was reacting to the Merseysiders’ defence after they conceded both goals 30 minutes into the game: “The one worry is that it’s still lacking in the back four and there’s not much Unsworth can change about that.”

Phil Jagielka, Ashley Williams, Leighton Baines and Jonjoe Kenny were deployed at the back against Leicester, and while the likes of Michael Keane, Mason Holgate and Cuco Martina have also largely featured in the department, Everton’s defending has left little to be desired.

They have now shipped 20 goals, an average of 2 per game – a record only surpassed by Crystal Palace’s 21.

With fixtures against Watford, Palace, Southampton, West Ham and Huddersfield next, the Goodison Park outfit have the chance to pick up much-needed points, or else, they could be on their way to the Championship if they fail to.
